Disposing of a Junk Car: 3 Options

Penny Roberts

If you have an old car that doesn't really run anymore, you may not know the best way to deal with it. Many people who have junk cars will often abandon them on their driveway. However, there are a number of ways you can safely dispose of a junk car which may also make you a little bit of money. Below is a guide to 3 of your options.

Strip the car and sell the reusable parts

The fact that the old car is not roadworthy doesn't mean that every part and component is useful. There will be many parts of your junk car which are still in good working order and which could be removed and then offered for sale on the used car parts market. Anyone who owns a similar car may be interested in buying a replacement headlight, battery or body panel from your vehicle. However, identifying which parts are reusable and finding customers in the second-hand parts market can be time-consuming, so you may want to consider taking your junk car to an auto wrecker. The auto wreckers will assess the condition of the car and will then offer to pay you a flat fee.

Recycle the car

Another way of disposing of a junk car while also making a little bit of money is to sell it to a recycling centre. The recycling centre is interested in the metal frame of the car, which can be crushed, melted down and recycled. The recycled metal can then be sold on the metal market and used to build new household goods or automobiles. The amount of money you receive from a recycling centre will depend on the quality and quantity of metal the body of your car contains.

Donate the car to charity

Increasing numbers of charities are now accepting junk cars as donations to support their cause. The charity will often sell any parts which can be reused or will sell the car to a recycling yard for a small fee. The money raised from these activities is then collected and used by the charity to continue its good work. As well as making you feel good, donating your car to charity could save you money, as you may be eligible for a tax deduction which matches the value of the donation.

About Me
Audrey's Automotive Blog

Hello, my name is Audry. I would like to offer you all a very warm welcome to my new automotive blog. When I was growing up in the 1960s, my daddy would always try to stop me playing with my brother's toy cars. Times were different then and people believed that little girls should not be interested in greasy engines. When I grew up, I went to college and got a job working for a large Australian bank. However, I didn't lose my passion for automobiles. I still like to hang out at the local auto repair and sales shop and I have learnt a lot during my time there.
